Nothing drives the work of Roni Horn (*1955 in New York) more than questions of identity and changeability. From a young age, Horn understood that “social conventions were largely based on gender determination,” a fact that she could not accept. In her photographic series entitled a.k.a., 2008–09 (an abbreviation for “also known as”), Horn created 15 pairs of photographs of herself taken from different phases of her life, telling the story of her constant transformation. Identity, as the conceptual series suggests, is a dynamic process.
Water is a recurring motif for the artist, seen throughout her photography, sculpture, drawing, and artist’s books. In the edition You aka Me, the words are doubled in a way which suggests the presence of water’s reflection. The changeability of this natural element, which also surrounds Horn in all its forms in her second home country of Iceland, fascinates her: “Even though it can take on the most diverse forms, it always remains the same.”
